Université Libre de Bruxelles – Emergency Assistance to the Academic Community
ULB offers an emergency assistance to members of the academic community fleeing Ukraine and being of Ukrainian nationality or benefiting from international protection, as well as to Russian and Belarusian opponents of the war who are in danger.
University of Heidelberg – Support for Students, Doctoral Candidates and Researchers
The university offers assistance to refugees aiming to begin a course of study in Heidelberg, to continue their studies or to take up a research post at the university after having had to leave Ukraine, Russia or Belarus.
Universität Münster – Fellowships for Academics Fleeing Their Homeland
The Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics: Dynamics of Tradition and Innovation” at the University of Münster has been investigating the complex relationship between religion and politics across epochs and cultures since 2007. In view of the crisis in Ukraine, the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics” at the University of Münster is now awarding with immediate effect five fellowships for academics fleeing Ukraine, Belarus or Russia.
Columbia University Scholarship for Displaced Students
Displaced students from anywhere in the world who are unable to complete their higher education. Applicants have to have refugee status living anywhere in the world; have received US asylum or submitted a US asylum application; are in the US under Temporary Protected Status; are Internally Displaced Persons. Displaced Afghan students on Humanitarian Parole or with Special Immigrant Visas are also now eligible for the scholarship. US permanent residents (green card holders, citizens, etc.) are not eligible for the scholarship. There are no age restrictions.
The Leibniz Institute for Educational Media – Fellowships
The Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute provides fellowships and research stipends to both young and established academics, as well as authors of textbooks. The institute offers quick and unbureaucratic support to researchers from Ukraine and to persecuted Russian researchers.
Freedom Degree for Russian Students

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar – Fellowships for Researchers who fled Ukraine and the Russian Federation
To help support academics and artists who have fled Ukraine and the Russian Federation in the hopes on continuing their work, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be offering four fellowships. The fellowships will support researchers with up to 2,000 euros per month for a period of 12 months. Mentors from the individual faculties will provide appropriate support.
BASEES Hardship Fund for Displaced Students in the UK
BASEES has set up a hardship fund to provide immediate and unbureaucratic financial support to Ukrainian PGT/PGR students based in the UK who are or will become displaced as a result of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Threatened PGT/PGR students from Belarus and Russia, who will be unable to return home for political reasons, are also eligible to apply. Applicants must be or have been registered at an institution of higher education in the UK during the academic year 2021/22, and still be based in the UK.
IWM – Fellowship Opportunities for Ukrainians
The IWM has expanded its fellowship opportunities for Ukrainian scholars, cultural figures, and public intellectuals.
The Kosciuszko Foundation
The program is addressed to scientists from Ukraine who have Ukrainian citizenship and hold at least a doctoral degree (PhD). The condition for receiving the grant is to be an employee or research associate of a Ukrainian university or other research unit and to submit the required documents.
Haifa Center for German and European Studies – Ukraine Emergency Fellowship
We are offering one one-year fellowship in residence at the Haifa Center for German and
European Studies for one scientist from Ukraine with a background in the Humanities,
Social Sciences or Law (with a doctorate). The fellowship holder should work on aspects of
modern European history and have a conversational command of English. We will be
flexible concerning the scope and area of studies (Europe in its wider dimensions).
Max Planck Institute – Visiting Fellowships for Social Scientists
Social scientists who have been displaced by the war in Ukraine are eligible to apply. Selection preference will be given to scientists whose work is germane to the Institute’s.
Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin – Fellowships
In each “class”, the Wissenschaftskolleg strives to put together a group of Fellows that is greater than the sum of its individual members. To this end, the Wissenschaftskolleg invites outstanding researchers from all disciplines and from all over the world for a research year in Berlin.
There are two paths to candidacies for fellowships: Candidates for fellowships can either apply on their own behalf or they can be nominated. Applications and nominations can be submitted at any time. We operate an electronic application platform for researchers applying on their own behalf.
The Wissenschaftskolleg also invites a few artists (musicians, authors, film-makers, etc.).

The University of Sydney offers Ukrainian Visiting Fellowships and Ukrainian Visiting PhD Scholarships.
Stanford – Taube Centre for Jewish Studies
Eligible are current graduate students pursuing a PhD in Jewish Studies at any Ukrainian University who have a good command of English.
University of Vienna – Visiting Fellowships for Ukrainian Refugee Philosophers, Historians of Science or Sociologists of Knowledge
Applicants must be PhD students or professional philosophers. The monthly salary is 2000 EUR brutto, about 1700 EUR netto (regardless of qualifications). This is enough to rent a room or small flat, and cover the basic costs of living. You will also have access to shared office facilities, to the library, and to computing facilities. And we give you support in integrating into life here. Unfortunately, we do not have the funds for relocation. Under special circumstances (if you come with children, e.g.) the salary can be increased but this would have to be negotiated ahead of time.
Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main – Stipends for Ukrainian Historians
The POLY research group on premodern Christianities at Goethe University is offering five fellowships to Ukrainian academics specialised in medieval or early modern history.
Aleksanteri Institute – Visiting Fellowships
The fellowship is intended for scholars who are carrying out research in a field relevant to the Aleksanteri Institute’s multidisciplinary research profile on Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and whose place of residence is outside Finland. Applicants can be at any career stage but must hold a PhD degree. The degree must be granted before the application period closes.
Visiting Fellows are expected to contribute to the advancement of Russian, Eastern European and Eurasiaan studies in general and to the research agenda of the Aleksanteri Institute in particular.
Grant-holders are required to have an excellent command of English.
JX Fund – European Fund for Journalism in Exile
The JX Fund is helping media workers quickly and flexibly to continue their work after they have fled war and crisis zones. It aims to strengthen independent media in exile beyond a current phase of high attention and to support the building of sustainable media outlets accessible for their home countries.
