The war against Ukraine has had innumerable impacts and academia has not been spared. In Ukraine, universities have been bombed and scholars have moved westward, many to neighboring countries. Academics from Russia and Belarus who have opposed the war or mobilization have been forced into silence or exile.

Every year, IERES invites scholars engaged in research on Europe and Eurasia to conduct their study within our rich intellectual community. We offer both resident and non-resident opportunities to early-career postdocs, senior scholars, and professional writers and researchers.

The Russian Global Academy helps the Russian academic diaspora to self-organize and maintain a degree of solidarity and cohesion. They aim at preserving Russian scholarly communities and fields by emphasizing digital professional communities and offering flexible solutions in a transition period of translation.

Since 2017, the DBU has been awarding fellowships for further qualification in the field of environmental protection and nature conservation in Germany to young master’s degree and PhD students from Ukraine.

The Central European Research Infrastructure Consortium, CERIC–ERIC, is an integrated multidisciplinary Research Infrastructure whose objective is to contribute to European top-level research and technological development and demonstration programs and projects, thus representing an added value for the development of the European Research Area (ERA). Scholars at Risk (SAR) announces new fellowship support for SAR network member institutions in North America looking to host threatened and displaced scholars from Ukraine. The purpose of the funds is to support the Ukrainian research and academic sector, enable continuing collaborations between scholars and institutions in or displaced from Ukraine and the international research community, and to anticipate and support rebuilding of the Ukrainian higher education and research sectors as conditions permit.

Scientific Exchanges is aimed at researchers who want to host their own scientific event in Switzerland, invite colleagues from abroad for a research visit to Switzerland, or visit their colleagues in another country.

Scientific conferences and workshops are the two types of event covered by the scheme. Research visits by Swiss researchers to other countries or by researchers from abroad to Switzerland are funded for a period of 1 to 6 months. For scientific events, the travel expenses and food and board costs of participants from abroad are covered, for research visits those of travelling guests.

The Scientific Exchanges funding scheme also supports the organisation of events that allow research communities to exchange best practices on how to develop a Data Management Plan, preparing research data and making it publicly available.
